Pocket-size accountbook, 1837-1858, recording payments from S.S. Routh, ca. 1837-1839, on behalf of the South Carolina Canal and Rail Road Company with employees and for the hire of African American slaves in Branchville, S.C.; earliest entry, 5 Jan. 1837, records wages of $30 paid to W[illia]m Grimes for his work during the month of Oct. 1836. Later payments, ca. 1857-1859, that apparently continue to document operations and maintenance of the railroad, record labor of African American slaves hired out to work for Routh in Branchville, and Routh's payments to merchants for household goods, etc.
